State Council Information Office hosts New Year's reception (12/17/01)
2004-06-12 15:16

The Information Office of the State Council hosted a new year reception Monday in Beijing for press officials of the embassies in China.

In a toast to the foreign officials at the reception, Zhao Qizheng, director of the Information Office, said that China stuck to the reform and open-up policy and made new achievements in socialist modernization in 2001.

While many countries witnessed slow economic growth, China continued to develop its economy at a high speed, Zhao said.

China has increased its gross domestic product by seven percent and has 200 billion US dollars-worth of foreign exchange reserve in 2001, he said.

After many years of hard work, China formally entered the World Trade Organization on December 11, Zhao said.

Zhao said his office hopes to help the rest of the world know China better. He urged foreign journalists to report news in China in a thorough and fair way.

In 2001, the office organized more than 30 press conferences, published some white papers, sent over 60 groups to visit other countries, and received more than 160 visiting foreign groups.

In addition, the office organized China Fest at the Asia-Pacific Week in Berlin, Germany, and Tibetan cultural activities in Australia and New Zealand.
