Q: US Senator Jesse Helms and some other members of the US Congress have recently proposed bills respectively opposing Beijing's bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games. What is your comment?

A: Beijing is bidding for the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games for the purpose of developing Olympic Games, carrying forward the Olympic spirit and promoting peace, friendship and advancement of the mankind.

It must be pointed out that any act of discriminating against a certain country or individual because of race, religion, politics, gender or other reasons goes against the spirit of the Olympic movement. A few members of the US Congress clinging to the cold war mentality and with ulterior political motives, attempt to obstruct Beijing from hosting the 2008 Olympic Games under the pretext of the so-called human rights problem, a blatant contempt of and challenge to the Olympic principles, to which we firmly oppose. This farce of theirs will also inevitably be spurned by people all over the world and the people in the sports community who uphold justice.
